Hose Assemblies for Efficient Water Treatment
August 12, 2024
When a competitor’s original expansion joint catastrophically failed without warning, Motion was there with the safer, stronger solution.
In a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) power plant, water is initially pumped from a well, pretreated, used as process water, then reclaimed and retreated with a brine concentrator for use in cooling towers.
This facility operates without using city water and without disposing of wastewater, making it highly efficient and environmentally friendly. Brine concentrators are essential in this process, using thermal energy to evaporate water, which is then condensed and discharged as clean, distilled water. These systems are also widely used in desalination plants, mining operations, and oil & gas well drilling.
The Challenge
One facility experienced a catastrophic failure of an original competitor's expansion joint upon start-up of their brine concentrator.
Because of the nature of their application, their original equipment couldn’t stand up to the aggressive application thus becoming an unreliable part.
This unexpected failure posed significant operational risks and potential safety hazards, which is why they needed a trusted solution fast.

A Safer Solution
After consulting with the OEM of the brine concentrator, the facility replaced the failed expansion joints with Garlock Style 206 expansion joints, known for their high safety factor of 4 to 1. Motion, a trusted supplier, provided these high-quality Garlock expansion joints.
Upon start-up, the Garlock Style 206 expansion joints delivered superior performance, reliability, and extended service life. This upgrade significantly improved plant safety enhanced the mechanical integrity of the equipment and provided the facility with a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
